"The Caspian Sea Chessboard" has so far been one of the most comprehensive research works accomplished on the Caspian basin which examines the relevance of the region to the modern system of international relations, as well as describing it as an autonomous sub-system with its complex regional realities and their connection to the outside world. The first part of the volume examines the transnational issues at stake in the Caspian that play an important role in determining littoral states' regional policies and which, in order to be addressed, demand cooperation among all of the riparian countries. It covers the legal status of the Caspian sea, regional arms race and militarization of the sea, energy infrastructure security, international cooperation in the field of marine environment, etc. The second chapter covers regional policies practiced on behalf of the Caspian littoral states. It tells about the interests of Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Iran in the Caspian Sea as well as their economic and political strategies in the region. Finally, the last chapter sheds light on the policies of the great powers in the Caspian region. Here, the authors examine the relations between the five littoral states and the United States, European Union, Turkey and China.
